I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, MFT #42278 who has been providing mental health services in San Diego County over the last 10 years.  My experience in working with individuals, couples, families and children has proven to be intrinsically rewarding in observing the positive changes health and wellness has brought into many peoples lives. My vision in establishing Coastal Family Therapy, is to have a serene place for individuals and families to meet their needs and achieve their goals. I am dedicated to helping people better their lives.

I earned my B.A. in Psychology from Arizona State University and went on to complete my M.S. in Counseling at San Diego State University.  During my training, I worked with high risk youth through San Diego CIty Schools providing school based counseling to children and their families. Additionally, I provided psychotherapy at the Center for Community Solutions (CCS), treating individuals, couples, families and children with a variety of mental health issues.  At CCS, I received specialized training in working with survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. In addition, I facilitated child focused group therapy building self-esteem and confidence in elementary aged children. Shortly thereafter, I went to work as a primary therapist for severly emotionally disturbed children at New Alternatives Day Treatment. In additon, as part of a collaborative team, I provided school based counseling services for high risk youth and their families. Prior to developing Coastal Family Therapy, I worked for PsyCare, Inc., a group mental health practice that included therapists, psychologists, social workers and psychiatrists.

My diverse experience includes working with individuals, couples, families, adolescents and children from all different cultural, ethnic, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds.  I work with patients with all types of diagnoses, including (but not limited to): depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, adjustment disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and ADHD. I have extensive experience in working with children with disruptive behavior disorders who often experience symptoms of anger/aggression, impulsivity, low self-esteem, communication struggles and family/social relational conflicts. I am also a Certified Positive Discipline Parenting Educator who is dedicated to improving connectivity within family relationships and improved family harmony.  I use a varied theoretical approach, centered on forms of therapy including cognitive behavioral, narrative, brief/solution focused and expressive arts therapy in my work with children.

I praise all prospective clients in taking the initial step in seeking psychotherapy. If you believe I can be of assistance to you, please do not hesitate to call me at 760 978-9718.

Warmly,

Heather Luevano
